About Project
Gurnet and Bug Lights, Inc.
Project Bug Light was organized in 1983 by a group of concerned residents in
response to plans by the United States Coast Guard to demolish the 100 year
old "Bug Light," officially known as Duxbury Pier Light. Since that time,
the preservation group has raised money to repair, restore and maintain the
lighthouse. In 1999, Project Bug Light expanded its preservation
efforts to include Plymouth Light, also known as Gurnet Light, at the tip of
Duxbury Beach. The group was involved in the Coast Guard's decision to move
the beacon 140 feet from the eroding cliff. On September 20, 2000 we changed
the name of our group to Project Gurnet & Bug Lights, Inc., which reflects
our interest and concern for both lighthouses.
